So exactly what is in mumbo sauce anyway? Great question! There have been many theories as to what ingredients go into making this tasty sauce and if you search Google for ‘mumbo sauce recipe‘ you are sure to find a short list of websites with recipes that seem to come close. But, unless you have a secret inside connection at one of your favorites DC area Chinese carry outs (which we don’t), you’ll never find out.
We here at Capital City Mumbo Sauce aren’t at liberty to share our secret recipe, but we can confirm it contains a tomato sauce base, sugar and a whole lot of LOVE! (photo source)

You have a typo on your site.

Is there a recipe for authentic mambo sauce?
Yes, there are several. Each person who produces it makes it differently, so you’ll have to try each one (including ours) to determine your favorite. – Arsha
Thanks! – Arsha
i think its ketschup,hotsause,sweetsour sauce
VERY good guess Deon!
I am from SE DC and now live in Las Vegas, will try your sauce and see if it would fit here, and by the you might want to team up with another DC local who provides a sauce for the wings served at Ben’s Next Door (next to Ben’s chili bowl) the difference is this sauce is all natural and has heat. Contact if interested is Uncle Bruthas Allsauce on the internet he is based in NW DC. I think the two could be a match unlike any other.
Hi Joe! Thanks for the tip, I will check it out.
Well, it is nice that it has tomato sauce, sugar, and LOVE. I want to know how much sodium it has.
I’ve always said that, because of the color, the tang, and the consistency of Mambo Sauce; that sweet-n-sour sauce was up in there somewhere!! But other than that, I have noooo idea. I just know that it taste good!
I didn’t grow up in D.C. A few years ago, I heard a lady talking talking about mumbo sauce and how the mumbo sauce that is being called mumbo sauce today is not the same as when she was growing up in DC. That peaked my curiosity so, I tried making some myself. Needlessly to say, mine didn’t taste right — I really didn’t have anything to compare it with…so, I don’t know how it is suppose to taste…after I receive my bottle from you, I will know how it should taste. I think the key ingredients are sweet ‘n sour sauce, hot sauce, and ketchup.
I got it, mumbo/mambo sauce is the “BOMB”! I left dc back in the late eighties an everytime i visit i gotta have it! I’ve gotten close but……………
I consider myself the best cook when it comes to Soul Food. But i would love to try your sauce, my kids ,and husband loves it on their chicken wings. So can you please send me a free bottle or two.
